Issue
The A6500 / A5500 gives a "ribbon out" error even though plenty of ribbon is remaining.
Troubleshooting
Confirm the ribbon has been loaded correctly:

This error may occur because of the ribbon sensor:

On the A5500, there may be an issue with the smart cell of the ribbon. If available, try another ribbon.
Update the YB Parts Database for the A5500:
A5500 - Update the Parts Database

If this does not resolve the issue, the ribbon clutch may have been damaged/failed or there may be an issue with the ribbon motor. Contact Brady Technical Support to setup a repair:
