Create Combined Objects (Combine Fields) in Brady Workstation 


Combined fields

The Combined Objects feature allows combining label objects as the output for an additional object. For example, combining Part Number and Serial Number entries from an imported spreadsheet into a barcode. Combine Fields can be used on a label file or template. 
 
Note: This tool combines 2 or more fields into a single objects. This feature is only available in Custom Designer (Pro version), not in Custom Designer Lite.

You are able to duplicate text or a barcode using Combine Fields. This creates a second object that is duplicated from an existing field on the label. Follow the same instructions below for a label file or template, and for Static or Placeholder fields on a template. 



Create Combine Fields on a Label
 
  1. Add objects to a label manually or by importing data.

  1. Select Combine Fields.

  1. Select the fields from Available Items and include Separators, if applicable.

  1. Choose either Text or Barcode in the Preview section. This will determine how the data will be combined and displayed.

  1. When the combined object has been created to your satisfaction, select Next in the bottom right corner of the Combined Fields window.

  1. Click and drag the combined object from the preview box on the bottom onto the label preview in the top of the Combine Fields window.

  1. Select Apply Change to close the Combined Fields window and apply the combined object to the label.

  1. Once the combined object is on the label, you may edit the properties (text or barcode) or move it again.

Combined Objects on Templates and Print Partner

 
  1. Launch Custom Designer, choose the Blank Template and click Create.

  1. Add multiple place holder text elements.
 
 
  1. Select Combine Fields at the top.

  1. Choose the fields to combine, and what should be created when the fields combine. Then click Next.

Note: Control codes and separators are beyond the scope of this article, however you can learn more about their application in Brady Workstation here: Using ASCII Control Codes and Field Separators in Custom Designer.
 
  1. Click and drag the combined element onto the label.

  1. Click Apply Change.

  1. Adjust the text or barcode.

  1. Save the template, then click the Home button in the upper right to return to the home screen.

  1. Launch Print Partner or select the recently created template from the list on the right.

  1. Once the label is open in Print Partner, enter data into your placeholder fields. The combined field text or barcode will automatically update once you enter in the data in the placeholder fields.
