TitlePrinter is Not Recognizing the Installed Labels or Ribbon
Body
"Printer not recognizing the media/roll/tape" is a generic explanation we receive that can refer to a variety of causes. Troubleshooting this problem requires taking a closer look at the actual symptoms.

Symptoms

Does the printer feed labels without stopping, or have difficulty keeping calibration? Refer to this knowledge base or your user manual to confirm the printer sensors are correctly positioned.

Are you receiving an error code? Search this Knowledge Base using that code: i,e "Error 58 on BBP31"

Determine the Point of Failure

  1. Swap out the ribbons and labels. Try a different combination of ribbons and labels by trying the original label with a new ribbon and the original ribbon with a new label. If possible load labels with a completely different part and lot number as some issues can be present across multiple rolls with the same lot number.
If the issue is resolved, you may have a bad smart cell on the media or the media may be missing the smart cell. Brady can replace defective media that is still within shelf life (2 years for most material). Contact Global Brady Technical Support Contact Information if you believe you have defective material. Provide the What Is The Label/Ribbon Part Number and Lot Number?

Note: Not all Brady media rolls contain a smart cell microchip. Only printers that support smart printer technology contain smart cell microchips: Brady Printers That Support Smart Printer TechnologyCan I Reset the Smart Cell Microchip Counter on the Label RollWhy Do Some Brady Materials Contain Smart Cell Microchips or RFID Tags?
Important: DO NOT swap the smart cells between materials.

  1. If changing the materials does not fix the issue, update the Label Library on the BMP61, M611, i5300, A5500 and A6200 printers: What is the Printer Label Library (Previously YB Parts Database)?

  1. Verify the labels and ribbon are loaded correctly. Search in this Knowledge Base for your printer and load labels and ribbon to view the instructions.

  1. It may be a mechanical issue with the printer: Requesting a Repair Authorization for a Brady Benchtop Printer or Requesting a Repair Authorization for a Brady Portable Printer.
