Check Media Errors on The BMP61
The BMP61 printer will back feed or reverse the installed label materials if the sensors are unable to detect the label or calibration notch in the side of the liner. This could be due to dust building up on the notch sensors on the inside of the printer. These three sensors are fairly sensitive, so even a small amount of dust building up may cause the printer to exhibit symptoms. We recommend dusting out the interior of the printer and cleaning these sensors if you are experiencing the printer back-feeding materials or errors saying 'Check Media'.
Note: The sensors are recessed, the cleaning card and compressed air may not resolve this issue, see cleaning instructions below.
Try This First
Load a roll of continuous (non-notched) media and attempt to print. This media does not use the notch sensors and should print without issues. This confirms the problem is likely dust buildup on the sensors.
Cleaning the Sensors
The three sensor locations are shown below, outlined by the red squares. In order to access them, both labels and ribbon must be removed. The following pictures are looking through the empty ribbon slot.
Important: Power down your printer, as having it powered on through the cleaning process may damage internal components.
- Use compressed air to clear out the interior of the printer.
- To clean the sensors directly, please use a cotton swab soaked with a small amount of >90% isopropyl alcohol to wipe them down (Brady part number PCK-6). If less than 90% IPA is used, the printer may need to sit for awhile so that the solution can completely evaporate.
The easiest sensor to locate is right above the spindle on the right, or near the back of the printer.
The second and third sensors are a bit harder to locate but can be found near the front ribbon spindle, or near the front of the printer. It is easiest to follow the curve of the metal plate until it makes the 90 degree turn and look directly behind and above that spot.
