Issue

When configuring drivers or troubleshooting communication issues for a new printer (when the printer shows up in "Unspecified"), sometimes you must manually choose the USB port. How can you tell which USB port should be used?

Resolution

1. Go to Control Panel > View Devices and Printers.
2. Right click the printer in Unspecified, choose "Properties".

3. Select the Hardware tab, click "Properties".

4. Choose the Details tab.

5. In the Property dropdown, select "Device instance path". Notice the USB number at the end.

6. Once you have the port number, you can assign this port in the Ports tab in Printer Properties. Reference this article for steps to manually install a printer driver and assign the port when Windows does not detect the printer: Unable to detect USB printer during driver installation
