The Bonjour Print Service
Apple's Bonjour print service is used by Brady Workstation to detect network connected Direct Print model printers. Bonjour is installed as part of the Brady Workstation installation wizard.
This service allows for zero configuration networking. The printer can simply be plugged into a network part, it will obtain an IP address via DHCP and appear in the Network Printers app. Multicast DNS is the protocol that allows this functionality.
How Does Bonjour Work?
1. Bonjour is installed as part of the Brady Workstation installation, or when a driver is installed for a supported printer model.
2. Bonjour monitors for network printers, once detected the service assigns the name of the printer to the card so it can be found on the network regardless of the printer's IP address.
Is Bonjour Required?
Although it does provide added convenience, Bonjour is not required for all printers to network in Brady Workstation. The i3300, S3100, M611, and A6500 printers can be manually added using the "Printers" application, because these printers allow viewing the assigned IP address from the touch display. Printers with an external BNC do not have this feature and require Bonjour: BBP33, BBP31, BMP61, BMP51/53, BBP35/37, and BBP85.
Requirements to Run Bonjour on Your Network
- The Bonjour print service can only detect printers on the same LAN. The printer will not be detected if it is connected to a separate VLAN
- The service runs on UDP port 5353, this port will need to be allowed through network firewalls
- This feature detects Direct Print compatible printers connected to your network. Please see this article for a list of Direct Print model printers: Brady Workstation - Direct Print Compatibility
