Issue
The BMP21-PLUS or BMP21-LAB printer does not power on.
Causes
The printer is designed to work with batteries that output 1.5v each, which is why it is not recommended to use heavy duty or ultimate batteries (heavy duty and ultimate batteries tend to output more than 1.5v each overpowering the machine). The printer does have a safety feature to protect itself from higher voltage batteries though: If it is overpowered it simply will not turn on, however, it is possible that the machine may become damaged if the printer is significantly overpowered.
Carbon Zinc Batteries - Carbon Zinc batteries will have a similar effect and are not recommended in the printer. Carbon Zinc has 1/2 the capacity of Alkaline and can not be used for what are called high-drain devices. The BMP21 is about twice the current demand of a digital camera.
Troubleshooting
Recommended Batteries - only standard AA Alkaline
Brady does not recommend the use of rechargeable AA batteries in the BMP21 printers. The performance of the machine can't be guaranteed because rechargeable batteries vary significantly on how much voltage they output. It is recommended that standard AA Alkaline batteries be used in the machine only. Also, do not use lithium, heavy duty, ultimate or mixed manufacturers' batteries (some by one manufacturer and some by another). Similarly, do not use a mix of old and new batteries. When you replace one battery, replace them all.
Charging the Brady Lithium Battery Accessory
Make sure the lithium battery is being charged correctly: BMP21-Plus / M210 - Charging the Battery Pack.
