Static vs DHCP - Which should you use?

We do not recommend attempting to add a device to your network unless you are a network administrator for your company. Most modern corporate networks will not allow devices to be connected without prior approval. Contact your IT support team if you are not sure if you are allowed to add a printer to your network.

DHCP

This method requires less configuration. A DNS server automatically supplies the printer's IP address, however this address may change when the printer loses and regains power. This could affect connectivity if you've configured your software or driver to use a specific IP address. The lease time of IP addresses assigned via DHCP will vary depending on your network's settings.

Static

A static IP address requires manual configuration. You will need to know an IP address that is not currently in use on your network. You may also need to supply the printer with information such as a gateway address, subnet mask, or primary and secondary DNS servers. Static IP addresses do not change or refresh, so addresses configured in the software or driver should always be accurate. Assigning a static IP means that IP address is no longer available for use for other devices on your network. Static IP's should be supplied by your network administrator to avoid potential address conflicts.
