"The following package(s) cannot be deleted" Error



This article assumes the user has attempted driver removal steps outlined in Printer Drivers - Full Driver Removal. When clicking "Delete" to remove a driver package, a message displays "The following package(s) cannot be deleted". 
  • Note: Driver configuration almost always require administrative rights. If any of the driver options mentioned below are grayed out, you do not have sufficient rights to perform these steps. You will need to contact your IT, Brady Technical Support cannot bypass admin rights-related restrictions on your PC.

Try This First!

1. Disconnect the printer from your PC and perform a full reboot of your PC. If this does not resolve, move to step 2. 

2. Launch Device Manager.

3. Go to View > Show hidden devices.

4. Expand Print queues.

5. Right click the grayed-out print queue for the printer you are trying to remove, select Uninstall device.

6. Navigate back to Device Manager > Print Server Properties > Drivers tab and attempt to remove the driver package. 



Additional Troubleshooting

Ensure the printer is disconnected before attempting these steps. 

Check for jobs stuck in the print queue


1. Right click the driver to be removed.
  • Note: If you see arrows on the left as shown in the image below, another driver is sharing this printer's port, see the section "Check for drivers sharing the same printer port".

2. Select "See What's Printing".

3. If jobs exist, right click and select "delete" or "cancel".

4. If you are unable to remove the stuck print job, see section "Restart the Print Spooler service".


Check for drivers sharing the same printer port

1. Right click the driver.

2. Hover over "Printer Properties" so that both printer options appear.

3. Choose one of the printer options.

4. Go to the Ports tab.

5. Select an LPT port (this can be changed back at a later time).

6. If you are still unable to remove the driver, see the next section.


Restart the Print Spooler service

1. Go to the start menu and type "services.msc" and run as admin.

2. Locate the print spooler service.

3. Right click and choose "restart".

4. After the spooler restarts, go to the Start Menu and type "Print Management" and run as admin.

5. Check "Printers With Jobs" to confirm there are no jobs stuck in the queue.

6. Select "All Drivers"

7. Right click your driver and select "Remove Driver Package".
