Network Directly from Printer to PC Network PortFor troubleshooting purposes, this method eliminates the network as a potential point of failure. End users may also use this method when determining the MAC address of a printer prior to connecting it to their main network. This method involves modifying the computer's ability to connect to your network, as well as making unsafe firewall changes. You should not attempt this unless you are a member of your IT or have approval from your IT admin. Requirements:
- Crossover cable - this looks like a standard Ethernet cable, but the pin out is different on each end.
- Sufficient privileges to change the network adapter settings and disable firewall settings.
- The IP address of the printer.
Step 1 - Configure the Network Settings on the Computer
- Go to Control Panel.
- Select Network and Sharing Center.
- Select Change Adapter Settings.
- Right-click Ethernet and select Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select Properties.
- Select Use the following IP address. You will need to select an IP address that is on the same subnet as your printer’s BNC. For example, if the printer’s IP is 192.168.0.1, then you could set the IP to 192.168.0.2. Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.
- Connect your crossover cable to the printer and computer’s network port. Some power cycling is often necessary after connecting the printer to a new network.
Step 2 - Disable Firewall Settings
- Go to Control Panel.
- Select System.
- Enter Windows Defender Firewall in the search on the left-hand side and select Windows Defender Firewall.
- Select Turn Windows Defender Firewall On or Off.
- Select Turn off Windows Defender Firewall for Domain, Private, and Public network settings.
Note: You will need to be logged in as an admin to perform this step.
Step 3 - Test PrintingIf printing is successful using this configuration, but is not successful when printing over the wider network, then you can safely assume something on the network is causing the connectivity issue.Related information
