Port Open Error
This error can occur if the Diagnostic Tool's interface (i.e. COM, LPT, ETHERNET) is set to the same port that the BBP11 windows driver [or any other printer driver] is installed on. For example:
If the BBP11/12 Windows printer driver is installed on COM1 and you are attempting to use COM1 as the Diagnostic Tool's interface, you will get a Port Open Error when trying to communicate with the printer.
This problem can be fixed by temporarily moving the conflicting printer driver to a different port.
To do this, begin by right clicking on the Brady BBP11-34L (or whichever printer driver is conflicting with the Diagnostic Tool) in Printers and Faxes ("Printers" if you are running Windows Vista ; "Devices and Printers" if you are running Windows7/8/10) and then clicking on properties ("printer properties" if you are running Vista or Windows 7/8/10). Next, click on the Ports tab and you will be able to assign the driver to a different port.
If you are still getting the same problem after trying the method above, then move the printer driver(s) back to the port(s) they were on originally and try the following:
1) Turn the printer off.
2) Hold down the feed button while turning the printer back on and keep the feed button held down.
3) The light on the printer will begin changing colors in a specific pattern (Solid Amber > Blinking Red > Blinking Green > Alternating Green/Amber > Alternating Red/Amber > Solid Green). Release the feed button when the light turns Solid Green. This will ignore any programs that may be trying to run from the printer's internal memory.
4) Close and Re-open the Diagnostic Tool.
5) The Diagnostic Tool should work now. Click on the "File Manager" tab in the Diagnostic Tool and then click on the "Get" button.
6) If the white space in the middle of the Diagnostic Tool populates with a file name (e.g. AUTO.BAS), that means the printer has a Stand-Alone program in internal memory (Stand-Alone programs allow the printer to be used without connecting it to a PC. These programs can be used with a serial device such as a barcode scanner or a PLC). You may want to ask your co-workers (or fellow BBP11/12 users) if the program is there purposely and if it is ever used. If the program is never used, click on the "Format" button which will delete all program(s) and allow the printer to be used normally again.
